If you’re allergic to casein or whey but still want to add protein to your diet for weight training or other purposes, hemp protein is a great alternative supplement to try since it is plant-based and fits into diets with certain types of food sensitivities. It’s also vegan friendly and gluten-free. The main drawback is that you’ll probably end up using a lot more powder than you would with other supplements for the same amount of protein. For example 1/4 cup of hemp protein (50% concentrate) contains 15 grams of protein while the same scoop of whey isolate would contain about 30 grams. However, it’s good to know you’ve got options.

The hemp protein is sourced from Canada and is USDA certified organic. It comes in a clear plastic pouch that’s easy to open and is resealable to keep out air and preserve freshness. The grain is very fine, like confectioners sugar, and the color of the powder is a light greenish brown like matcha powder. The expiration date on my bag is about 1 year out from the date of purchase but at 15 servings a bag, it’ll be consumed much sooner than that.

On its own the powder smells a bit like wheat flour and tastes like roasted nuts with a hint of sweetness. I added one serving (4 Tbsp = 1/4 cup) to my post-workout smoothie and it tasted pretty good. The hemp protein adds a subtle flavor but because it has fiber in it that doesn’t dissolve, it had a grainy texture to it. While not particularly smooth, it wasn’t unpalatable. Just be sure to stir it once in a while or drink it fast because it settles otherwise. It would work better as a protein boost in baked goods or granola bars where the texture isn’t as noticeable. Protein supplements like hemp are helpful when weight training to build muscle mass and provides not only protein but fiber, potassium and other vitamins and minerals.
